A VTA light-rail train collided with an unmarked San Jose Police car Thursday night, injuring the on-duty officer inside.

The force of the crash pushed the vehicle several yards, leaving shattered glass on the roadway and the officer trapped inside his car on First Street just north of Highway 880.

The officer was transported to Valley Medical Center for treatment, where he is in serious but stable condition. His identity was not released. Two passengers in the light-rail train complained of pain, but did not receive treatment.

The two-car train, which was carrying 19 passengers, was heading north on First Street about 6 p.m. when the car drove into its path, said Bernice Alaniz, spokeswoman for the Valley Transportation Authority. Both the train and the car were heading north.

The collision temporarily halted service for about two hours.

San Jose Police officer Enrique Garcia said the incident is under investigation.
