New AMD chip debuts in August

|

Advanced Micro Devices, seeking to wrest sales away from Intel, will begin selling a new version of the Opteron computer-server chip in August.

The chip will run as fast as 2 gigahertz, or billion cycles a second, said Randy Allen, a vice president in AMD’s server and workstation unit. Still, that isn’t fast enough to compete with Intel’s products, said Cody Acree, an analyst at Stifel, Nicolaus & Co. in Dallas.

Versions of the chip, which Sunnyvale-based AMD calls Barcelona, will appear in computer systems in September, Allen said. Faster versions will be released before the end of the year, he said.
